Congaree National Park and Poinsett State Park, October 20-23

Monday, October 20, we arrived at Poinsett State Park in South Carolina and set up camp.

We went to the town of Sumter and ate at Willie Sue’s.  No pics, but the best Salmon I’ve had and Kurt’s steak was excellent as well. Well worth the drive!

Tuesday we travelled 45 minutes to Congaree National Park. The Visitor Center was closed due to the government shutdown (so we could not get our book stamped), but the trails were open to hike. It’s a very nice park - and it was a peaceful easy flat hike.

This Pine tree was very wide and very tall!

When we got back to the camper, we had dinner and sat around the fire.  No wind and very pleasant!

Wednesday we hiked from our site in Poinsett.  This was a very nice hike with Spanish moss on the trees.

After our hike, we relaxed and sat outside reading. This little butterfly kept flitting around my feet.

We packed up Thursday morning and headed to Saint Mary’s, Georgia.

We arrived at our KOA, set up and went to dinner at Locals Dockside.  It was 2 for 1 margaritas- so we ordered those.  Not good - very watered down flavor.  We also ordered the Cajun triple tail fish - and that was fantastic!! Kurt’s sweet potato fries were amazing!

Thursday morning we packed up and headed to Hart Springs.

Shenandoah National Park - October 16-19

We arrived at Shenandoah National Park on Thursday, October 16 and set up camp at The Meadows Campground. Friday we headed out on the Stony Man hike. It was a very stony path that was hard to follow at first, but we followed AllTrails and saw some amazing views of the mountains and valleys.

Most of the path was stony like this…

Saturday, October18, we first hiked the Rose River Trail. This was a beautiful hike, sometimes climbing over rocks, along the River with lots of little waterfalls.

Then we decided to Miller’s Head trail.  Down first and up coming back.

Our tired bodies went back to the camper and we got ready for dinner.

We ate dinner at the Lodge at the Meadows.  The food was excellent! I had the trout one night and the pork chops the next. The trout was truly amazing!

Kurt had the shrimp and grits and the meatloaf. He was very happy and satisfied with his meals as well.

We left Shenandoah and headed to Fancy Gap, Virginia where we spent the night at the KOA. We went for dinner at the Mason Jar and both had delicious country fried chicken and green beans with potato.  Very good!  No wonder I don’t lose weight on these trips!  ðŸ˜‚

Traveled through North Carolina to South Carolina where we will stay at Poinsette State Park.
