New River Gorge - October 13-16

Country roads, take me homeTo the place I belongWest Virginia, mountain mamaTake me home, country roads

We made it to West Virginia and to our camp site at Rifrafter by New River Gorge.

Tuesday, October 14 we hiked the Endless Wall Trail. It was a chilly and foggy morning when we started.

So very foggy! Could not see anything. The gorge is somewhere below...

A ladder going down into the gorge.
Nope - didn't go down!

You can just make out New River through the fog.

The fog finally lifted, and on our way back, we were able to see what we could not see before.

The Endless Wall

After our hike, we stopped at the Visitor Center and then went on a vehicle tour around the bridge.

Wednesday, October 15, we hiked the Long Point Trail. Again, a foggy chilly morning!

We got to the point, and decided to sit, eat an apple and wait for the fog to lift.

The dark ridge is the Endless Wall.

After that hike we went on a short hike at the Burnwood Trail.  The trees in this forest had not been logged and so were about 350 years old. A nice peaceful hike.

I love how the roots of this tree are reaching over the rock to the ground below.

From this trail, we rode to the Sandstone Falls - an hour away through very winding roads and very small towns.

Then we took the hour long ride back to Tito and Beauty.  Then went out for dinner.  The places we ate in Fayette over the days were Secret Sandwhich Society, Pies and Pints, and Tequila Taco Bar. They were all very good, but our favorite was Tequila Taco Bar.

Thursday morning we packed up and headed to Shenandoah.
